Worked as chief bookkeeper and cashier for the Portage Lake and Lake Superior Ship Canal Company, then became superintendent. Was general contractor for the construction of public works, river and harbor improvements at Houghton and on the Great Lakes. Conducted a lumber business under the firm name of "James Pryor & Son.
