Erik Nordberg, MTU Archivist12/9/2005 4:19:17 PMCalumet was one of the first settlements in the United States for Slovene immigrants. Historians claim that Jozef Vertin and Peter Ruppe were two of the region's Slovene settlers. This photograph shows the Vertin store at the corner of Oak and Sixth Streets in Calumet. When it was first built, the building only had two floors; two more upper floors were added at a later date. Anonymous3/1/2010 12:12:29 AMThis is a picture of the store that was owned by Joseph and John Vertin, sons of Mathias Vertin. This family was also from the same village as Josef Wertin, who had stores in Calumet and Hancock and was the father of Bishop John Vertin, the only member of his family who used the Vertin surname.
